This position is in the Medical/Surgical/Telemetry Unit in Inpatient Acute Care Directorate at Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) in North Chicago, Illinois, West Campus. The FHCC is larger than just a single facility, but rather a system of facilities throughout Northeastern Illinois which provides medical and dental services to U.S. Military Veterans, Recruits, Active Duty and eligible beneficiaries. The Health Technician (Telemetry) purpose is to assist in the care and management of patients in acute care setting. The position provides clinical, technical and direct patient care support. In this capacity the incumbent must be skillful and flexible in establishing goals and setting priorities. Duties may include but are not limited to: Direct patient care under the supervision of an RN, ability to rotate tour of duty between day, evening and night shifts as needed to ensure staffing coverage, working weekends and holidays as assigned. Admit and provides patient orientation to the unit. Performing basic nursing skills including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration and oxygen saturation, glucose monitoring, oral suctioning, nasal swabs and discontinuation of peripheral IV catheter. Performs bladder scanning, records and reports results. Performs hourly rounding on patients; documents patient information on flow sheets. Provides telemetry monitor teaching, placement and care of electrodes notifying ICU technician upon admission and discharge. Performs 12-lead EKG, can identify basic rhythms and arrhythmias, provides appropriate communication to RN. Activates Code Blue and initiates CPR when indicated. Assist in CPR resuscitation and other procedures and therapies, documenting rhythm changes. Assists with toileting, catheter care, specimen collection using appropriate personal protective equipment. Promotes correct use of ambulation devices, recognizes safety risks, assist in behavioral/psychiatric situations. Assists with feeding, wound irrigation and dressing changes.
