The incumbent works as a Nursing Assistant for the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg, WV. MAJOR DUTIES: The Nursing Assistant (NA) performs duties related to patient care, ward administration, and patient flow. The purpose of this position is to improve the quality and timeliness by which basic services are delivered to our patients to relieve clinicians of the demands of providing routine non-professional services. The incumbent must possess the personal qualities, desire, and attitude necessary to adapt to rapidly changing demands on time and an ability to quickly acquire needed skills to perform assigned tasks. In addition, the incumbent is expected to contribute to their self-development through outside reading, self-study activities and other training initiatives. The incumbent will interface with personal computer (PC) applications as well as numerous electronic medical record applications. The Nursing Assistant (NA) works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Duties include: Maintains a clean and safe environment across the nursing unit including patient rooms, public areas, storage rooms, and supply closets. Is responsible for the proper reprocessing of reusable medical equipment/devices Measuring vital signs and Intake and Output. Promptly notifies RN of any abnormal findings Is responsible for Veteran Centered ADL care including but not limited to bathing, toileting, dressing, grooming, shaving, etc. Records treatments, findings, and progress in electronic patient record in a timely fashion. Promptly notifies RN of any abnormal findings Performs and records a variety of advanced specialized treatments. Ensures proper specimen collection, labeling, and delivery to lab. Transports patients to various test and appointments timely. Assist with transfer using wheels chairs, stretcher, and multiple safe patient handling devices following all safety guidelines to avoid injury of self and others Utilizes aseptic techniques when applying compresses or complicated dressings. Assists doctors and nurses in the performance of diagnostics examinations including but not limited glucometers, EKG, bladder scans, etc. Assists physicians and nurses in the care and treatment of the ill receiving treatment. Enters information into the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS). Teaches patients and the family members the need to continue procedures for proper health care. Monitors use of oxygen and assists with incentive spirometry. Applies safety devices and locked/unlocked restraints. Assists with postmortem care. Recognizes emergency events or changes in patient condition requiring RN notification. Secures patient belongings according to established medical center policy and procedures. Maintains privacy and confidentiality when providing patient care. Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: All shifts are open.
