Assists in the gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens.
Job Duties
Accessions specimens in laboratory information system or by manual method when applicable.
Performs gross examinations and dictation for certain prescribed types of tissue specimens; preserves the remaining specimen after the completion of sampling.
Performs dissection of tissue in a fresh state for preparation of frozen sections.
Assist and perform microtomy of frozen tissue section on cryostat instrument.
Performs staining of frozen section slides for microscopic examination by pathologist.
Ensures accurate labeling of frozen section slides with patient identification.
Notifies Pathologist and Pathologist's Assistant of requests for intraoperative consultation.
Performs special handling of renal biopsies, skeletal muscle biopsies, and other selected surgical pathology specimens.
Performs dissection of bone and calcified surgical pathology specimens utilizing provided electrical cutting equipment and initiates decalcification procedure.
Properly disposes of specimens according to regulatory agency guidelines and established procedures.
Maintains equipment, participates in established preventive maintenance program, and alerts Pathologist's Assistant of any equipment problems.
Assists in proper handling and storage of supplies, notifies technical laboratory assistant when inventory is low.
Instructs new employees and residents about the functions of the laboratory.
Participation in completion of assigned initial and subsequent competency assessment examinations required and maintains working knowledge of applicable laboratory information system programs and system changes.
